2013 Devinci Wooky SL Carbon 29er Mountain Bike
2013 Devinci Wooky SL Carbon 29er Mountain Bike
A bike like the Devinci Wooky SL doesn't happen overnight. It involves countless hours of research, design, testing and finally, execution. For many, Devinci is a new brand in cycling. However, Devinci has been designing ground breaking bikes from their research and development division, inspired by the automotive and aerospace industries, for over twenty five years. Their engineers use state-of-the-art modeling and analysis software to submit new bikes to virtual testing. No Devinci bike will see the light of day until it passes this scientific rigor. If the bike is competent enough to make it to a production sample, it is then face to face with what Devinci calls, "the test bench". The test bench allows them to quantify their bikes smash-resistance, solidity, and rigidity. If it fails -- it will never say Devinci.
The Devinci Wooky SL is their premium superlight cross country 29er hardtail bike. It features superlight and stiff DMC-G carbon frame with full response geometry and a tapered 1 1/4" headtube. Devinci Carbon Monocoque technology uses multidirectional layers of carbon fiber that are superimposed in a specific pattern. They also use Nano Powder, which is way of reinforcing the resin with microscopic carbon tubes. FRG, or full response geometry, puts riders in the best possible XC position. It gives every ride a quick and aggressive behavior at lower speeds and maintains unparalleled stability at higher speeds. Additionally, low standover height gives the Wooky SL a nimble feel.
The Wooky carbon frame is designed with a PF30 bottom bracket shell. Press-Fit 30 is a new design led by SRAM. Essentially, it's all of the best from BB30 and Press-Fit bottom brackets in one captivating package. The key difference with Press-Fit 30 is how the bearings are fitted into the frame. Bearings are housed in nylon cups and are pressed into the Wooky frames bottom bracket shell. It features an integrated seal, pre-assembled into the cups, to further prolong bearing life. The advantage is huge weight savings, a narrow Q-factor, more ankle clearance, greater bearing durability, as well as stiffer and stronger crank construction. If that weren't enough, this also allows for larger diameter frame tubes, which increases the Wooky's overall frame stiffness.
Fox is widely recognized as a leader in fork design and performance. The Wooky SL features a Fox Float 32 CTD FIT 29 fork with a gorgeous Kashima coating. While the name is a convoluted mouthful, the design couldn't have been made easier for any rider to use. Forks in general have become over-complicated to tune. Lockout, rebound, preload, both high speed and low speed compression -- it can be overwhelming. The new CTD design (Climb, Trail, Descend) utilizes one lever to quickly switch the compression to the ideal setting. The Climb setting adds low-speed compression to diminish bobbing when standing on the pedals. Trail mode presents moderate low speed compression to balance efficiency and the Descend setting features the ideal blend of high and low speed compression for plush action on steep and aggressive sections of trail.
Incredibly light and efficient components decorate the Wooky SL for the same reason why you'd put a race car engine in a race car: it just makes sense. A Shimano XT drive train supplies all of the lightening fast shifting and braking accuracy you need. The BR-M785 brakes in particular stand out here and have a 125-percent power rating and 22mm over-sized ceramic pistons, which reduce vibration and increase stopping power.
The wheels on the Wooky go round and round. Easton EA70 XCT wheels are widely spec'd by many bike brands for their compromise between durability and lightweight performance. While many wheels aspire to provide this balance, they often exceed 2000 grams in weight. Not the EA70 XCT. They weigh only 1745 grams. This UST compatible wheel set features welded Easton aluminum rims, butted spokes, a generous 19-millimeter internal rim width for the highly lauded Maxxis Crossmark 2.1 tires, and sealed cartridge bearings. Finally, the thru-axle 15x100 front and 12x142 rear wheel supply incredible stiffness for maximum power transfer, resulting in a bike that tracks in and out of tight single track corners like it's shot out of a cannon.
It's not your average amazing cross country bike. It's an amazing-amazing cross country bike built around incredible design, proven testing, and with unbelievable forethought into the right component spec for your task at hand. The 2013 Devinci Wooky SL is superb.
